What is New Eyes for the Needy?

New Eyes for the Needy is a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit, non-sectarian volunteer organization whose purpose is to improve the vision of the poor throughout the world.

New Eyes operates with 200 adult and 55 student volunteers and 3 staff positions.

Who does New Eyes help?

New Eyes helps poor people in the United States and developing nations. Since our founding in 1932, New Eyes for the Needy has helped over 7,000,000 visually impaired poor people throughout the world.

How does New Eyes help poor children and adults?
  • U.S. residents in need are given vouchers which are used to purchase new prescription eyeglasses.
  • Reusable donated eyeglasses are sent to medical missions and international charitable organizations for distribution in developing nations in Asia, Africa, Central and South America, the Mid-East and Europe.
How many poor people does New Eyes help?

Last year, New Eyes purchased new prescription eyeglasses for 5,167 people in the United States. The number of people we can help depends on our income from donations, grants, and proceeds from the sale of donated scrap precious metal, hearing aids, jewelry and giftware.

We shipped more than 161,000 pairs of used eyeglasses for distribution to poor people overseas during 2008-2009.

How can you help?
