After the initial training where everyone’s face looked panicked and “I’ll never get this” moans circulated the room (the usual reaction of newbie sorters), the Team Charity members quickly caught on and ended the day by sorting over a thousand pairs of used glasses. I always like to think that I’m  a pretty good trainer, but  full disclosure compels me to admit that a few of the Team Charity crew were repeat customers and helped their teammates get the gist of sorting.

We so appreciate that Team Charity members spent part of their weekend helping us after working themselves all week long. It’s a great team and we look forward to seeing them again!

“I am working with a recent refugee from Somalia, Halimo Issaks.  I helped her to get glasses through your organization and it has CHANGED HER LIFE.  She lived in a refugee camp in Kenya for 20 years and during that time her eyesight deteriorated.  She has never had glasses before and can’t believe all she can now see!  I am helping her to learn English.  Before getting glasses I would need to write everything in huge letters.  Now she can work right off the pages of her workbook (and the world around her!).  This would not be possible without New Eyes for the Needy.

As See Founder Diana Epstein says, “It doesn’t cost a lot to do a lot of good.”

Proceeds from ticket sales and the silent auction ensure that children and adults in need get the prescription glasses and improved vision that empowers them to pursue a better quality of life.

Over 100 supporters enjoyed the sounds of DJ Louie XIV, who donated his time and talent to New Eyes’ event.

“New Eyes is grateful to everyone who attended See for Change 3, to DJ Louie, to the volunteers and silent auction donors, to everyone who helped make See 3 a great event,” said Susan Dyckman, executive director.  “Through See for Change, Diana engages new people in New Eyes’ mission to improve the vision of children and adults in our country and around the world. She’s successfully carried our message to hundreds of new supporters over the past several years. We’re grateful to have her on our team.”

The School of Rock Chatham Street Team performing at Kids Rock for Vision Concert 2013

The kids did it again! They brought great music and great performances for a great cause. The full tally is not in yet, but it’s safe to say that this concert brought in over $8,000. That’s a lot of glasses for disadvantaged children living in the United States!

Special thanks go to Will Taggart as chairman of the Kids Rock committee and for his fine performances on Saturday, and to co-chairs George Psichos and Andrew McGann. And, of course, our gratitude to School of Rock Chatham for their continued sponsorship enabling these kids to shine in a professional manner.
